During your holiday at the South Landes campsite near Bayonne, you will have plenty of time to enjoy a wide range of sports, including cycling, sailing and surfing or some relaxing activities on a boat trip or on the sandy beaches. But that's not all!
Just 15 minutes from the Lou P'tit Poun 4-star campsite between Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx and Hossegor, Capbreton stands out from the other seaside resorts on the Landes coast for its harbour, the only one in the Landes department. Once a busy fishing port, today Capbreton is a famous seaside resort on the Atlantic Ocean.
Sightseeing and activities in Capbreton
If you visit Capbreton, you will definitely give in to the temptation of a walk along the famous 189-metre-long Estacade. The Estacade was built by Napoleon III and symbolised the renewal of the harbour after centuries of decline following the diversion of the River Adour.
For a trip to the beach, holidaymakers can choose between 7 beaches, some of which are very popular with seasoned surfers. They include the Gravière, Savane (also known as the Santocha surfing spot) and Océanides spots, all adapted to experienced surfers. Beginners can head for the beaches of Notre-Dame, La Centrale or Le Prévent.
A trip to Capbreton is also a chance to see some of the many summer markets:
- Fish market: every day of the year
- Evening market in July and August on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
- The Estacade evening market: arts and crafts on Thursday evenings
- Food market: every Saturday of the year and on Thursdays in summer
Although Capbreton is little known for its architectural heritage, the town has preserved vestiges from its medieval past. During a stroll in the town centre, you can admire the Maison du Rey where the famous King of Navarre, Henry IV, once stayed. Visitors can then continue their walk as far as Grand’Rue to see two other corbelled and half-timbered houses built in the Middle Ages, including one hosting the town's heritage collection and exhibitions on Capbreton history. Plenty to delight history buffs!
